What Are The Different Kinds Of Flanges Available?

A flange is an internal/external ridge, a projecting flat rim/collar/rib on an object that serves the purpose of providing strength. It may also be an attachment for maintaining position of objects. A pipe flange is one flange that is a disc, collar, or ring, used to join two joints of pipes by providing it increased support for strength, implementing attachment of more items, and blocking off a pipeline. They are welded or screwed to every connecting piece of the pipe, and are connected with bolts. These pipe flanges range in size between 1/4” to 48” and are available in various materials like stainless steel, carbon steel, cast iron, brass, aluminum, bronze, and plastic. At times, flanges are internally equipped with layers of materials of a complete different quality as the flanges themselves. These are lined flanges that are used for specific purposes. It is very important that flanges fall under specific standards such as ASME, ASTM, ANSI, or API, confirming their approved dimensions, dimensional tolerances, and other qualities. Trim Engineering Services is one of the leading double flange bobbin manufacturers in India that offers bobbins, gaskets, pirns, cops, and many other textile machinery parts of the best quality. There are various types of flanges available, the most common ones stated below.

Groove & tongue flanges – Groove and tongue flanges usually accompany each other, with the groove flange having a machined grooved depression, while the tongue flange having a machined raised ring. These two mating flanges perfectly fit into each other – they self-align or align just well.

Ring type joint flanges – These are hexagonal metal rings with a groove on the face that assure leak proof connections, and are suitable at high pressure applications.

Slip on flanges – These flanges slip over the pipe and settle by welding at the top and base sides of the flange, which avoids leakage and spills, while providing quality strength to the connection.

Blind flanges – These flanges are used as a part of fixing or sealing an end of the piping framework. Mainly utilized as a part of high pressure weight applications to stop the stream of fluids and gases, these flanges are most favoured for their simple entry and easy access.

Weld neck flanges – These flanges are attached to the pipe by welding the neck of the flanges, which helps in transferring the stress from the flange to the pipe, making it most suitable for high pressure applications.

Threaded flanges – These flanges are appropriate for use in low pressure applications. They are fixed to the pipes only with threads, thus the name. And, this explains why these flanges are not used for high pressure applications (since they are not welded).

Socket weld flanges – They flanges are used with smaller pipes in high pressure applications, wherein the pipes are inserted into the sockets of the flanges and then welded around the top portion for smooth flow.

Square flanges – These flanges are similar to other flanges, but just that they square in shape, which is why they provide a long lasting and durable isolation point.
